A theme dear to my heart, and yet I haven’t really spoken about it.
Sadly and very dangerously, what I see a lot in the spiritual community is a rising number of „space holders“ who haven’t walked the roads of the path they are teaching and yet they evoke energy in people’s lives, without any sense of personal responsibility and accountability for what can happen next.
There is so much on the spiritual market today selling us Kundalini activations, Kundalini yoga classes, Kundalini breath workshops and Kundalini retreats. And seeing this makes me scream in my head.
When I was in the very early days of my yoga teacher training I was so excited about activating Kundalini Shakti within me. The more I read about Her and about the orgasmic creative energy flowing through the body and the awakening of psychic abilities the more I wanted „to have“ it. To experience it. To be finally free from all the suffering..
Little I knew, after singing up for trainings, classes and retreats, I met Her.
And I wasn’t ready-physically or emotionally-for the voltage of Her rising within me.
And there was No one to talk to. None of those teachers, none of them space holders.
𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬, 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫.
Kundalini awakening is a transpersonal energetic experience that shakes the very fabric of a person’s being.
She transforms you and strips off the layers of ignorance and illusions and she requires upmost reverence and respect. And yes, there is a price coming with it. Our ego and sometimes our sanity.
The reason why this happens is because when Shakti meets an energetic obstacle on her way up, rising through our body, it’s like a fast moving car hitting a concrete wall. All the unfelt pain, unresolved emotional blockages, trauma and limiting beliefs stored in the tissues of our bodies come to the surface to be seen, felt, moved through. And it can be A LOT.
And if your yoga teacher, host, facilitator or practitioner cannot offer you some form of aftercare, check in, holding space or helping you manage this energetically… think twice before you sign up for whatever they are offering.
Activated Kundalini can manifest as:
🐍anxiety and panic attacks
🐍depression
🐍suicidal and/or intrusive thoughts
🐍big big emotions
🐍physical disbalance or a disease
So please, please do vet the people who you entrust with this process! Ask them questions, be curious about where their desire to share this practice comes from
( I have never met a person who has walked the roads of hell and then being out there advertising it.. just saying…)
There is more to this process than a shiny sounding, orgasmic experience. And we cannot sign up for highs without considering the lows.
The purpose of 𝚈𝚘𝚐𝚊, 𝙱𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔 and other modalities is to be used as a spiritual path to cleanse the body from emotional, physical and spiritual blockages and to prepare the nervous system for Kundalini‘s rising. It’s a process known as the Dark Night of the Soul.
She’s a force of nature that requires upmost respect.
She’s highly intelligent and honestly sometimes blindly brutal when she’s awake and in motion.
If Kundalini is awake, but not grounded it can be really dangerous for our mental and physical wellbeing.
So how to ground it?
🌹Through moving with it- I do not recommend more yoga/ breathwork etc- again it can arouse your nervous system even more. But dancing, shaking and going for walks in nature is really important. Climbing. Everything that connects you to your physical body
🌹Painting/ Drawing your process. Kundalini is the Creation force of the Universe in human body. So be creative!
🌹Wording it ( poetry, storytelling, music) or using your voice ( singing, screaming, ugly crying- it releases some of the physical tension)
🌹Touching or laying on the ground.
🌹Gardening , playing with clay, pottery - literally anything that gets your hands into the earth.
🌹 Eating meat- it grounds the body!
🌹Talking to someone who has walked the path about your process. There is a deep healing in sharing your experience with someone else, knowing that you are not going crazy.
🌹Working with an energetic healer
Recently I am finding myself more often in spaces where the topic is brought up or people will approach me sharing their own experience.
See, in the old yogic and many indigenous traditions around the world, the process of awakening of one’s soul for its divinity has been „supervised“ by an elder. A person who has walked through the process and has gained knowledge and experience how to support individuals on their path. And it took the disciple years, decades even, for one to be physically, emotionally and mentally prepared for the process of merging one’s individual consciousness with the Divine.
Nowadays, with the boom of new age spiritual culture, we rush into spaces looking for quick fixes and answers to our problems. We are looking for shortcuts. We are arrogant in our thinking that we are bigger than the process of maturation and distillation
We want a single Human Design or a Gene keys reading to tell us who we are and what to do. Ayahuasca and plant medicine retreats are full to the brim, Kundalini yoga and activation classes too. ( don’t get me wrong- I‘ve sat with plant medicine myself). We rush from one modality into the next, wondering why the previous one is not working for us. We rarely sit with a teaching long enough and patiently enough to embody it.
Why is this an issue and why is it dangerous?
We are born into a culture of impatience, consumerism and quick fixes, where no one tells us that there are no shortcuts.
We have no elders to teach us. ( Elder as per definition is a leader or senior figure in a tribe or other group.) And we see the state of the world we live in.
We do have facilitators, but no guides.
We do have old uninitiated people, but no elders.
People who carry the medicine of the crone are often not welcome in spaces.
When you choose a path, a new modality, a lineage.. look also into who is holding the space for it. What is their story, their path, their experience. Are they embodying it or do they use it as a cloak of „coolness“ around their shoulders?
