He fell in love with the beautiful nymph Eurydice. But their happiness was not meant to be forever. The day after their wedding, Eurydice was bitten by a poisonous snake and she died.
The grieving Orpheus descended into the underworld with his lyre to search for his beloved Eurydice.
And Even Hades, the god of the dead, was moved by Orpheus’s grief and granted Eurydice permission to follow him back to the upper world—on one condition: Orpheus must not look back until they had emerged from the underworld.
And so, they began their journey home.
But just moments before they reached the light of day, Orpheus could not resist a fleeting glance at his beloved. In that instant, Eurydice vanished forever into the realm of shadows…
In some versions of the myth, he was killed by a group of frenzied Maenads who tore him apart. His head and lyre, still singing mournfully, were thrown into the river, and they were eventually carried to the island of Lesbos, where the Muses bury them.
Why is Orpheus' journey a tale about initiations?
Orpheus' journey into the Underworld is a profound alchemical Initiation into the mysteries of Life and Death and how we humans navigate those in our everyday life.
In the course of our lives we pass through many initiations. Initiations are simply the thresholds of new beginnings. And all beginnings and endings implicit a change from one state of being into another- birth, communion, puberty, marriage, giving birth, loss of friendships or a job, break up and divorce, death.. It is part of Life itself.
But more often than not we humans (especially in the Western societies) find ourselves unprepared and not knowing how to move through those challenging times. We are bitten by the Snake, the great revealer of illusions. And there is often no one to support us through it.
We are no longer the person we were. Even if the change has been one for celebration- getting first bleed, a wedding, becoming a mother or a father- a new way of being is dawning upon us. And if we are not taught and guided by our elders, we can get lost or not fully complete the process.
